Do Your Part, Then Let Go
A practical guide to acting responsibly, releasing uncertain outcomes and protecting your peace.
Read StorySong
A hopeful, humorous golf song about taking the shot, accepting the bounce and returning for another round.
Part of the Control What You Can Ecosystem
New round today... fresh start
This is the one... I can feel it
Spring in my step, sun's just right
Today's the day, it all lines up
Long and straight like never before
Middle of the face, that's what it's for
Around the green, I see the line
Every shot's gonna turn out fine
Chip it close, or better still
Watch it drop, I've got the skill
On the green, first putt every time
Or a tap-in, that's just my style
Walk to the next tee like I belong
Act like nothing could go wrong
In my head it's crystal clear
Every shot is already there
Play the shot, give it a crack
Tell yourself "you've got the knack"
But once it's gone, you're a fan now
with no control as to how it will land.
"Sit, Sit, Come Back, Go, Go, Stop" you may whisper or shout in vain
As it sails off once again
You must let it go, you've done your part
Now just take it where it lands
AHH, heading straight for the trees again
"Kick out," I tell the ball
Please hit a branch and bounce back clean
Don't dive in deeper... not today
Deep in the scrub I spot some ground
One clean patch with space around
"That's where it is," I say with pride
(It's nowhere near... I lied)
If it's sitting by a tree
Please not too tight, just playable for me
Not blocked out,
Just something I can try
I walk up close, one look is all
It's right in front, no swing at all
Tree says "nope," no shot to play
That hope I had just faded fast away
Go for glory? Not today
Take the drop and walk away
Call it "smart"... protect the score
Stay the course and play for more.
All these things I can't control
Still I'm backing every roll
Play the shot, give it a crack
Tell yourself "you've got the knack"
But once it's gone, you're a fan now
with no control as to how it will land.
"Sit, Sit, Come Back, Go, Go, Stop" you may whisper or shout in vain
As it sails off once again
You must let it go, you've done your part
Now just take it where it lands
You choose your swing, your aim, your pace
Not the bounce or where it lays
Some will turn and some will fade
Some won't break the way you planned
Still we show up time again
Chasing that one perfect swing
Somewhere between hope and truth
That's why we play... that's what we choose
Play the shot, give it a crack
Tell yourself "you've got the knack"
You can't control how it will land
You can't control how it will land
You must let it go, you've done your part
You must let it go, you've done your part
Now just take it as it lands
Now just take it as it lands
Ahhhh, Next round... I've got it sorted
Definitely... next round
